Army Men, a real-time action/strategy game, brings to life those plastic figures that every kid's played with. Playing as either the Green or the Tan army, you defend your base and strive to obliterate your foe's. Each side packs serious heat, including choppers, gunboats and tanks, as well as ground forces that fight with missiles, flamethrowers, anti-aircraft artillery, and more. 3DO's focusing on making the combat intense enough that you don't get bogged down in strategic details, and the gorgeous graphics should keep you coming back for more.
Such is the stuff of Army Men, a long-time-in-the-making action strategy blend from 3DO games. The concept is a great one -- animate those little tan and green army men you used to buy as a kid and cash in on the huge market for both action and real-time strategy titles.
A soundtrack containing classic rock blended with hip hop was released on July 7, 1998, by DreamWorks Records. It peaked at 103 on the Billboard 200. The film score was composed and conducted by veteran composer Jerry Goldsmith. In addition, a video game based on the film was developed by DreamWorks Interactive and released by Electronic Arts on September 30, 1998. Kenner Products (a subsidiary of Hasbro) produced a line of toys, which featured the Gorgonites and the Commando Elite. Burger King teamed up with the film to promote their new product, the Rodeo Burger. They created a line of kids' meal toys tied to the film. They were met with some controversy after the film received a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). Burger King executives claimed this caught the company by surprise as they were led to believe the film would receive no higher than a PG rating. According to Joe Dante, the MPAA gave the film a PG-13 rating due to the scene in which the Commando Elite put drugs in Phil and Marion's drink. While the pamphlet accompanying the toys included the disclaimer "While toys are suitable for children of all ages, the movie Small Soldiers may contain material that is inappropriate for younger children," some restaurants accepted an exchange for Mr. Potato Head toys.

3DO's Army Men franchise has been one of the mainstays in the company's portfolio since the first game hit the PlayStation in 1998. The subsequent entries in the series have taken the franchise in several different directions by focusing on different types of gameplay and developing an extended cast for the games with varying degrees of success. The latest entry in the franchise aims to make some radical changes to the Army Men landscape. Army Men: Sarge's War focuses on one of the most recognizable characters in the games, Sarge, and puts him in an action game with a darker edge to it. We had the chance to check out an early build of the game to see how this reinvention of Army Men is coming together on the GameCube.
Army Men: Sarge's War features a linear, mission-based structure that should be familiar to action-game veterans. You'll have a primary objective in each level with a varying number of assorted secondary objectives, such as capturing the tan army's flag hidden in each level or destroying a certain number of structures. The levels are broken up into sections that you'll travel between over the course of a level. Gameplay is pretty standard for a third-person shooter, and the controls let you lock onto a target, strafe, crouch, and perform all the actions you'd expect from a game in this genre. While the control is still being tweaked, the game handles pretty well even in its rough state. In addition to the single-player mode, the game will offer a split-screen multiplayer mode for up to four players. 041b061a72
